Terraforming Mars causes a real buzz in Spiel Essen 2016 with his first place in the BGG Essen ranking and his third place in the Fair Play ranking.<\/p>\n

Theme<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the 22nd century, Earth is overpopulated.\u00a0\u00a0There is a lack of space and resources dry up. Humanity must find a solution and decide to terraform Mars to be able to settle there.<\/p>\n

And\u00a0this is already\u00a0in this\u00a0theme that\u00a0Terraforming Mars surprise us. Players will work together for the good of humanity. They go together terraforming Mars. In order to terraform Mars, it is necessary that its average temperature reaches 8 \u00b0 C, that\u00a0its oceans fulfill 9% of its surface and that the oxygen level in the atmosphere reaches 14%. It is only when these three criteria will be realized that the game ends. Terraforming Mars nevertheless not allow, as in Archipelago <\/a>or Tomorrow<\/a>, a player to sabotte this goal so that everyone loses. No, in Terraforming Mars, you have to work together for the good of humanity. So players have a common goal and yet they will compete for Terraforming Mars is a competitive game!<\/p>\n

Pick cards\"SONY<\/a><\/strong>
\nTerraforming March begins during set-up where players must decide their corporation (= special abilities) and cards that make up their starting hand by buying them from\u00a010 cards taken at random from the common deck.<\/p>\n

The playing of cards is very important in Terraforming Mars.\u00a0\u00a0Blind pick-up of cards is the heart of the game. In addition to your starting hand consisting of cards you have chosen from the cards taken randomly, the rest of the game is in the same vein. Each turn, you draw 4 cards and decide which you keep by buying 3 million each.\u00a0Luck is present of course. But you draw so many cards in Terraforming Mars and the choices you’ll make from them will be so important that this luck is not so disturbing even if it may give some advantage to certain players.<\/p>\n

There are more than 200 different cards in the deck and so many possible combinations that the game is super addictive. It is a furious desire to play it\u00a0again after each game.\u00a0 Deciding what to do\u00a0with the cards drawn and see every game so different from each other is awesome!<\/p>\n

\"SONY<\/a>There are a lot of card effects: exchange of\u00a0resources, increase production,\u00a0animals farming,\u00a0terra forming at lower prices, increase the temperature or the oxygen level, …<\/p>\n

Catch-up
\n<\/b>Terraforming Mars also offers alternative actions that allow players to catch up with the standard actions if the drawn cards are not suitable.<\/p>\n

Interaction\u00a0by objectives<\/strong>
\nTerraforming Mars propose 2 types d’objectifs:
\n1) Etre le premier<\/span>
\nEtre le premier \u00e0 atteindre 35 points, \u00e0 avoir 16 cartes en main, \u00e0 construire 3 villes,… sont des objectifs communs.\u00a0 Mais il ne suffit pas d’atteindre un objectif en premier, il faut aussi payer 8 millions pour prendre l’objectif.\u00a0 Et seuls 3 objectifs pourront \u00eatre r\u00e9clam\u00e9s.\u00a0 Une course \u00e0 l’objectif va avoir lieu.<\/p>\n

Terraforming Mars features 2 types of objectives:
\n1) Being the first<\/span>
\nBeing the first to reach 35 points, to\u00a0have 16 cards in hand, to build three cities … are common goals. But it is not enough.\u00a0 To achieve a goal first, we must also pay 8 million to claim the goal. And only 3 goals can be claimed. A race to the goal will take place.<\/p>\n

2) Bet on majority<\/span>
\n5 majorities bring\u00a0VPs: having the most cards of a particular kind or having the most resources of a specific kind\u00a0at the end of the game allow you to earn extra VPs.\u00a0 However, to win these additional PVs,\u00a0you must pay to achieve it\u00a0and only 3 majority may take place. In addition, the first count costs 8, the second 14 and the third 20. The earlier you book the countdown, the less it costs. Excellent mechanism.<\/p>\n

Interaction on the map\"SONY<\/a><\/strong>
\nPlayers will found cities and create forest and ocean areas. They\u00a0will place the tiles with the mark of their color which will give them VPs at the end.\u00a0\u00a0Also on the map, players will compete for places.<\/p>\n

Despite the presence of luck in the deck of cards, Terraforming Mars seduce. He initially seduces with precisely these cards and the management of them. The choice of cards to hold (for a fee) or discard (for free) that players will have during the game will dictate and rhythm the game. Then the number of different cards seduces with\u00a0so\u00a0many different\u00a0combinations\u00a0and the important replayability. Every game of Terraforming Mars is different. And despite everyone want to optimize his hand of cards, the game is very interactive with the majorities,\u00a0the common objectives and common map.\u00a0 Terraforming Mars is very addictive and takes players in a theme of science very original. Players will work together for humanity while wishing to gain maximum profit. It’s not as futuristic as it \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Barack, a few weeks ago : \u2018Guys, in 2030 we will land on Mars, put an american flag on the ground, and start the terraforming of the planet ! \u00bb<\/p>\n

Keep cool Barack, no need to waste billions of dollars, take your bike, go to the nearest boardgames shop (I am sure it exists in Washington too) and spend only a few bucks to buy Terraforming Mars! 3 hours later you\u2019ll get it, your terraformed planet! Anyway, you are not the boss anymore now…<\/p>\n

In Terraforming Mars each player plays a big corporation which will contribute to the terraforming of Mars (I think you get it now). We will play cards and realise different actions, which will help increase the temperature, increase the % of oxygen in the atmosphere, and increase the surface of the planet covered by water. Once a predetermined level reached in those 3 categories (8\u00b0, 14% oxygen and 9% of the surface of the planet covered by oceans) Mars is terraformed and the game ends (the one triggering the end of the game not necessarily being the winner).<\/p>\n

This short description is the first (big) asset of the game: the theme is extremely present<\/strong>, you genuinely have the impression to contribute to a grand project. In addition to that, the fact it is not a race makes it even more interesting. You can accelerate or not the terraforming, in light of your game, the cards you have in your hand, the other players\u2019 boards\u2026 Knowing that everybody has interest in terraforming, as increasing the t\u00b0 or the % of oxygen increases your terraforming rating (=gives VP at the end, but also indicates your level of revenues at each round, which is a nice idea), and placing ocean tiles on the planet gives you bonuses, either immediately or at the end of the game via VP. In short everybody must terraform, but all is a question of pace.
\n\"SONY<\/a><\/p>\n

Second asset of the game, the mechanisms<\/strong>. They are quite classic (choice between different actions to be done at each round) but they work perfectly between themselves. There are many different possibilities (which is good for the heavy gamers, they will have plenty of opportunities to burn their brains), but this never becomes boring or too heavy, as the rules are clear and easy to master, and the iconography is complete and very clear as well, be it on the board, on your personal board or on the cards. Last but not least, and we come back to the presence of the team, you can spend 8 heat units or 8 plants units. But this is not to get a red cube or a yellow cube, which, combined, will give you a green cube and when you get 3 green cubes you receive 1 purple meeple. No no no. If you spend 8 heat units or 8 plants units, it is to terraform Mars!!! The theme makes the gameplay lighter and more fun.<\/p>\n

As for the game itself, very classic as I said earlier. Cards (\u201cprojects\u201d) represent technologies, findings or buildings that you will use to terraform. Each player starts with 10 cards, drawn randomly (which is not necessarily innocent, I come back to that). At the beginning of each generation (=tour, but terraforming is long, so we talk about generations!) the first player marker goes to the next player, then all players draw 4 card, and choose how many they want to buy (or not, you can buy none). Then, in the order of the players, each player plays 1 or 2 action among the following:<\/p>\n

– play a card from your hand (by paying it)<\/strong> \u2013 allow to receive un bonus immediately, to place a city, an ocean or a plantation on the planet, to have an additional personal action in the next rounds, to give reductions to buy other cards\u2026
\n– use a standard project<\/strong>, which are always available for everybody on the general board (sell cards to get money, increase the t\u00b0 by paying money, increase the % of oxygen by paying money…)
\n– claim a milestone<\/strong>, i.e. win 5 VP at the end of the game if you are the first one to reach a given objective (have at least 3 cities on the planet, have at least 35 on the terraforming rating scale…)
\n– fund an award<\/strong>, which will trigger a counting at the end of the game on a specific criteria (most tiles on the planet, most heat units\u2026), giving VP for the first and second players
\n– convert 8 plants units to increase % of oxygen<\/strong> (and by the same token increase your terraforming rating by one)
\n– convert 8 heat units to increase the t\u00b0<\/strong> (and by the same token increase your terraforming rating by one)

This phase continues as long as at least 1 player wants to play 1 or 2 actions. It ends when all players pass (a player who has passed can\u2019t play anymore during this phase if the other players continue to play). Last phase of the generation, the production phase, which takes place on your personal board. Players start by converting their energy units into heat units, then produce following what they have developed with their cards (energy, heat, plants, tools, stars bonuses) and earn their money (following their rating on the terraforming rating scale, on the general board).<\/p>\n

Once the 3 required levels are reached the planet is terraformed, the game ends and we count the VP by adding the terraforming ratings, the VP given by the milestones and the ones given by the awards, the VP given by the plantations placed on the planet and the cities placed on the planet which are adjacent to plantations, and last the VP mentioned on some cards.<\/p>\n

Verdict<\/strong>: amazing! I would even say: AMAZING! As said earlier the game is very classic in its mechanisms but it works perfectly. Rules are very clear. Theme is extremely present. The game is fun. It is deep as there are many different possibilities, many different ways to earn VP. But it remains fluid and even almost gives a feeling of lightness (ok I am maybe stretching it a little bit here). Some will say there is too much luck because you draw 10 cards randomly at the beginning. Bull****! Of course (as we draw cards) luck might be a small factor. But the fact that you start with 10 cards corners this luck very strongly. In addition to that, in the \u201cnot for beginners\u201d version (which we haven\u2019t played yet, it won\u2019t take long\u2026) instead of starting the game with the same corporation for all players, each player receives 2 different corporations (with different starting revenues, special abilities…), which will allow to reduce even more the luck involved in the drawing of 10 cards at the beginning. Not to mention the fact you will have to pay for each of the 10 cards you want to keep, contrary to the beginners version, where you keep all of them for free. In short for me the luck involved in the game is quite limited, but I am fine to sacrifice myself by playing a few more games in the coming weeks, in order to make sure it is well the case. Yes I know, we do a lot of sacrifices at Vin d\u2019Jeu, sometimes it is very tough. But we are ready to anything to make you happy…<\/p>\n

A fantastic game this Terraforming Mars, which completely deserves all the praise it is receiving!<\/p>\n
