Kanban is, with the expansion of Space Cadets Dice Duel, the expansion of Core Worlds and Panamax, one of the many new games of a publisher that we appreciate more and more by Vin d\u2019jeu: Stronghold Games. Indeed, they are no afraid to publish experts games, for our pleasure of course.\u00a0 \u00a0Indeed, we note that the board games \u00ab\u00a0family\u00a0\u00bb or \u201cfamily+\u00a0\u00bb is changing a lot with an increase of the number of annual published games and with the quality of those games. The more \u00ab\u00a0experts\u00a0\u00bb games remains until now quite confidential. The number of sales of this type of game is still very limited. I therefore welcome especially the few courageous initiatives to publish such complex games with high quality. \u00a0Stronghold games thank you! \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n

The author<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vital Lacerda<\/a>, the author of Kanban, he too is not afraid. He is not very productive since its first game, Vinhos <\/a>(our game of the year 2011<\/a>) and CO2 <\/a>(one of our 2013 favorites\u00a0 games<\/a>). \u00a0In other words, Kanban is his third game in 4 years. But that’s normal as the depth of these games, the multitude of mechanisms, originality and complexity.\u00a0 It has to take a long time to design, test and balance Kanban. \u00a0Hats off and thank you Mr. Vital to be one of the few contemporary authors (with my friend Uwe <\/a>course:-)) to create games of such depth.<\/p>\n

The theme<\/strong> & its integration into the mechanics<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kanban is a company that manufactures cars. The game put us really into the world of business with a unique and realistic way. \u00a0Power Struggle <\/a>has already managed to dive into this universe but Kanban goes a little further. \u00a0Welcome \u00a0into the corporate world, to the point that some are wondering if you can call it still a game \ud83d\ude42 . \u00a0Players are newly managers hired by the company. They are also not called players but colleagues! \u00a0Kanban\u2019s general manager is a woman: Sandra<\/strong>. \u00a0And already there, Vital\u2019s creativity appears: You have the choice between 2 \u00ab\u00a0Sandra\u00a0\u00bb: the nice or bad Sandra! \u00a0The game will be completely different if you choose one or the other (and you have to choose between one of the two). Indeed, the nice Sandra will give you bonuses if you manage some of the goals while the bad Sandra will penalize you if you do not reach them! Marvelous.<\/p>\n

But that’s not all! Everything in the game reflects the world of business. You will have to allocate your time as efficiently as possible between training, produce the various parts required for the manufacture of a car, homework to fill in your free time ;-), support the assembly line, recycle the car parts, go to the warehouse, test cars, progressing in your HR certificates, …<\/p>\n

The top of it is the organization of meetings. When the company produces enough cars, Sandra will organize a meeting where each manager (= player) will be able to talk about different topics. Talk about a subject is equivalent to complete certain goals and win the corresponding VPs. At each meeting, 4 subjects are on the table. So players have four goals, visible to all from the beginning of the game. After a meeting, four new goals will be on the table allowing players to guide their actions and strategies to achieve them. The thing is that we do not talk all at once at a meeting and it will be the most trained player who can speak first (= realize the first goal). And when you talk about a subject after another colleague has spoken over it (= achieve an objective after another has achieved it), Sandra will listen less carefully than before and you will receive less VPs.\u00a0 In Kanban, we do not speak about VPs but about PPs, performance points, \u00a0with pleasure my dear \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n

But that’s not all, each player has also three objectives cards in his hand and will have to perform one = talk about his pet project even if he has done it miserably, he must talk to Sandra about it during the meeting. \u00a0And the others will also be able to speak about it (= achieve the objective (pet project) of the other players). But the speaking time of each is limited, you have to work effiency in Kanban! This is represented by seats around the table. Via different types of actions, \u00ab\u00a0sub-goals\u00a0\u00bb to achieve in the game, we will be able to get seats. With 1 seat you can talk about a subject = achieve 1 objective.<\/p>\n

The mechanics of the meeting is really fabulous as it represents well the theme and immerses players in it.\u00a0 But also, the meeting\u2019s mechanics gives almost infinite variety to the game. \u00a0In every game of Kanban, you will participate in 2 or 3 meetings, which means that you will have the opportunity to realize between 8 to 12 different objectives in each game (for 3 players it’s a little less). In addition, during the preparation, we will randomly draw three general objectives to achieve that represent the long-term strategic plan of the company. Customers will also play their role by asking some car colors (= goal to produce these cars rather than others), and each department will also have targets. A multitude of purposes so that your games will vary considerably.\u00a0 It will also strangly complicate the game! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

The<\/strong> central mechanic and the sub-mechanics<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Kanban central mechanic is a worker placement mechanic. But again, Vital has created a rather original worker placement mechanic. \u00a0First of all, no, I have not done any misspelling, you\u2019ve well readen, \u00ab\u00a0worker\u00a0\u00bb with no \u00ab\u00a0s\u00a0\u00bb! \u00a0Yes, you have only 1 worker and that 1 will never do more. \u00a0And no, we don\u2019t make children in the business of Kanban \ud83d\ude00 \u00a0In Kanban, Vital has implemented a reather simpliest mechanic than for Vinhos <\/a>since there are \u00ab\u00a0only\u00a0\u00bb five possible actions in Kanban while there was 9 in Vinhos<\/a>. \u00a0Those 5 actions correspond to the five departments of the company where you are going to work: the creative department creates new designs as well as for exterior car parts than for interior car parts, warehouse for parts, his own office in order to work in the department of his choice, the assembly line to produce cars and the circuit to test the models. At every turn, we will move the meeple representing us to \u00a0one of the two available places of another department,. The moving mechanism is quite original and depend on the department you worked in the previous round, and on the department where your colleagues worked the previous round or want to work in during the current round. \u00a0It works very well and it limits the choice of action.\u00a0 Often you’ll face a choice between 2 or 3 different actions. But this choice is really complex because it is influenced by a multitude of factors:
\n– In each department you will be able to perform different actions. Note also that, as in Vinhos<\/a>, each department has its own mechanism which is always very original and could be a game in itself. It gives me every time a great \u201cgame pleasure\u201d to discover the ingenuity of this uncommon author.
\n– 2 action boxes are available in each department, a box allows for two actions while the other 3. Obviously, if you choose 3 actions, you have to play after the one who do realises 2. The choice between these two boxes is really difficult and a little risk-taking may be necessary from time to time …
\n– The various objectives
\n– The actions you want to perform afterwards.\u00a0 This is a very strategic part of Kanban, since you will plan your actions several turns in advance and not just follow a certain sequence.\u00a0 You will also pay attention to be well placed to be able to choose one or another action box after the one you are in.<\/p>\n

This worker placement mechanic can be quite frustrating because if you do it not well or if the circumstances of the game provoke that the other players are blocking you, you’ll have to wait many turns before that you will be able to perform a particular type of action.<\/p>\n

Conclusions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kanban is clearly the follow-up of Vinhos <\/a>as it offers a very similar type of game:
\n– An original action choice mechanism, without random.\u00a0 Those actions present sub-actions with always a sub-original action choice sub-mechanism!\u00a0 \ud83d\ude00
\n– A well represented theme where the player are involved from the beginning to the end of the game.
\n– A complexity offering a certain heaviness which can be confusing during the first games.\u00a0 This complexity also brings an important depth and strategies to the game.
\n– A long life of the game with almost infinite variety of games.
\n– Unique happiness for all strategic game\u2019s lovers who are not afraid of 90 minutes explanation of the rules.<\/p>\n

Eager to test this Kanban, I ended the game with some questions that I still can’t answer. Now that I write this \u00ab\u00a0critique\u00a0\u00bb, may be I’ll find the beginning of an answer?<\/p>\n

First, the feeling after our first game. I ended last, way behind all the others. This is a game about cars and I ended it without any car in my garage at the end of the game. Normal then that I ended last: one good point for the game.
\nNow, I have the impression that, in a 4 players-game at least, there is a big chance that 2 will catch the \u00ab\u00a0move\u00a0\u00bb of the game while two will be missing it. Indeed, for each department, there are only 2 spots for workers and some actions need to be performed before some others. If you miss one, the cars you were looking at getting are gone and you must \u00ab\u00a0push\u00a0\u00bb other cars through the chain until one suits you. In addition, while you do this, trying to get back in, the others prepare for the next wave.
\nIt is clear that during this first game, I was completely \u00ab\u00a0counter\u00a0\u00bb the production pace, unable to get back in.<\/p>\n

There is\u00a0another reasoning I’d like to share. Those tiles we have to take in the R&D department, they have two roles: one is to develop a specific component on a type of car and the other is to \u00ab\u00a0take\u00a0\u00bb a car from the Testing Department. To my opinion, this bring some \u00ab\u00a0chaos\u00a0\u00bb (not the right term indeed but couldn’t find another one close enough), meaning that if you don’t have the correct tile at the right moment, you lost a few turns in the game. A few turns because you need to move from one department to another each turn: R&D to get the tile, Testing to use the tile and testing also to get a car (but not at the same time with the same tile).
\nTherefore, in such a complex game, I wonder why one had to bring this opportunist aspect?<\/p>\n

I agree that the whole flow of the game works correctly (if I \u00ab\u00a0bypass\u00a0\u00bb my above remarks), with some genius ideas (the meeting is probably THE one) but … something is missing.<\/p>\n

If I had to summarise the points, they would be:<\/p>\n

– Worker placement type of game: nothing original here;
\n– (Too?) Complex game, with some chaos and\/or opportunists;
\n– A game board that is hard to read (at least during our first game);
\n– A theme that is somewhat present but with some confusion in its\u00a0flow;
\n+ The meeting mechanisms (we recognise the author’s touch here;)<\/p>\n

Personally,<\/span> I start<\/span> very good the<\/span> 2015<\/span> season<\/span>: after<\/span> Fields of <\/span>Arle which\u00a0is<\/span> just perfect<\/span>, I played Kanban<\/span> which is<\/span> also<\/span> sublime.<\/span><\/p>\n

At this<\/span> point,<\/span> I<\/span> already<\/span> feel like already<\/span>\u00a0played<\/span> the Vin d’jeu game<\/span> of the year<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and<\/span> my<\/span> favorite game of <\/span>2015.<\/span> This year <\/span>promises just\u00a0to be<\/span>\u00a0a grand cru<\/span>.<\/p>\n

But<\/span> what for game has<\/span>\u00a0Vital<\/span> Lacerda<\/span><\/a> done!\u00a0\u00a0It’s just incredible<\/span>. As<\/span> ingenious<\/span> mechanical<\/span>, what richness and<\/span> play depth\u00a0<\/span> and how<\/span> well<\/span> this<\/span> theme<\/span> is in the actions of<\/span> the game!<\/span><\/p>\n

To all<\/span> those who enjoyed<\/span> Vinhos<\/span><\/a> ,\u00a0 <\/span>do not wait<\/span> a second longer<\/span>, go & play <\/span>this<\/span> fabulous<\/span> game that deserves<\/span> a very good place<\/span> at the temple of the\u00a0games<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lots of<\/span> stuff<\/span>, stuff everywhere and<\/span> 16<\/span> pages of rules<\/span> … The least<\/span> we can say:<\/span> KANBAN<\/span> is intended<\/span> for an audience of<\/span> expert players<\/span> who already have<\/span> good experience of<\/span> management games<\/span> …<\/span> It took me<\/span> a<\/span> hour<\/span> explaining<\/span> the rules to the other players<\/span> and go back<\/span> a couple of times<\/span> in the rules,<\/span> to confirm<\/span> my statements<\/span>. Not because it is<\/span> poorly written<\/span>, but there are many, many<\/span> things to remember.<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme is<\/span> quite strange<\/span> as it<\/span> almost<\/span> comes to managing<\/span> a company<\/span> with<\/span> KANBAN<\/span> … And I<\/span> am well placed to<\/span> speak<\/span> since my<\/span> real job<\/span> is<\/span> to manage a team<\/span> using<\/span> precisely<\/span> the<\/span> Kanban<\/span> method.<\/span> ..<\/span> After<\/span> the test,<\/span> I would say that<\/span> the game is very<\/span> well done.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kanban<\/span> is an excellent game<\/span>. The game<\/span> has a<\/span> great learning<\/span> curve and<\/span> will delight<\/span> expert players<\/span>. It has<\/span> excellent ideas<\/span> as<\/span> placement system,<\/span> movement of<\/span> manager<\/span> and <\/span>meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion, if<\/span> you are looking for<\/span> a great game<\/span> of<\/span> super<\/span> management and<\/span> you have a<\/span> good experience in the<\/span> genre …<\/span> Go for it!<\/span> Kanban<\/span> will be your<\/span> next challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n
